G-BOMBS may sound scary but it’s nothing to be afraid of, they are nutrient dense foods that fuel your body to help you feel fuller and live longer. G-BOMBS stands for Greens, Beans, Onions, Mushrooms, Berries, and Seeds. The acronym was created to help people reminder the 6 types of food they should incorporate into their diet every day.
Research says that G-BOMBS have powerful anti-cancer and anti-fat storage effects. You may not know this but foods that protect against fat storage also protect against the growth of any abnormal tissue, such as a tumor. Below we get into the specifics about each of the letters in G-BOMBS and why you should incorporate each and every letter into your diet.
G - Greens
- Leafy greens are nutrient-dense and an excellent tool for weight loss.
- They contain only about 100 calories per pound so you can pretty much eat unlimited quantities.
- Green vegetables are also rich in folate (the natural form of folic acid), calcium, and contain small amounts of omega-3 fatty acids.
B - Beans
- Beans (as well as lentils and other legumes) are digested slowly which helps stabilize blood sugar, reduces hunger, and helps to prevent food cravings.
- Beans have both high levels of fiber and resistant starch as well as carbohydrates that are not broken down by digestive enzymes.
- Because of the slow digestion process and all the dietary fiber, beans are great for weight loss.
O - Onions
- Not only are onions, leeks, garlic, shallots, chives, and scallions great for flavor, but they also have a positive impact on the cardiovascular and immune systems, as well as anti-diabetic and anti-cancer effects.
- Although they are often avoided due to their eye-irritating nature, they contain organosulfur compounds which can slow tumor growth and kill cancer cells.
- They also contain a high concentration of anti-inflammatory flavonoid antioxidants that contribute to their anti-cancer properties.
M - Mushrooms
- All types of mushrooms have anti-cancer properties;
- Mushrooms are unique in that they contain aromatase inhibitors – compounds that can block the production of estrogen.
- Even the most commonly eaten mushrooms (white, cremini, and Portobello) have high anti-aromatase activity.
- Mushrooms contain powerful angiogenesis inhibitors, meaning they prevent new blood vessel growth, which is needed for tumor growth and fat tissue growth.
B - Berries (and Pomegranate)
- Blueberries, strawberries and blackberries are true superfoods, linked to reduced risk of diabetes, cancers and cognitive decline.
- The plentiful antioxidant content in berries helps to reduce blood pressure and inflammation, prevent DNA damage that leads to cancer, and stimulate the body’s own antioxidant enzymes.
- Berries are also an excellent food for the brain.
- Also rich in protective polyphenols, berries do not raise insulin levels, and have angiogenesis inhibitors, which protect against cancer and reduce body fat.
- Although they are a seed, pomegranates are often grouped with berries – they offer multiple cardiovascular health benefits and contains anti-cancer compounds.
S - Seeds
- Nuts and seeds are healthy fat sources
- They help increase the absorption of nutrients in vegetables, as well as supply their own spectrum of micronutrients including plant sterols (which help to reduce cholesterol), minerals, and antioxidants.
- Flax, hemp, chia, and walnuts (among others) are rich in beneficial omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for heart and brain health.
- Seeds and nuts act like a fat sponge in the digestive tract, preventing all their fat calories from being absorbed.
