We all need to power down from time to time, but what about our computers? If you’re on one of our Managed Security/Desktop plans, don’t power down your computer when you leave for the day. Why? Leaving your computer on allows us to perform the necessary maintenance on your machines to keep them working as efficiently as possible.
What about your home computer or computers not covered under one of our managed plans? We’ll cover different viewpoints on the subject to help you decide what’s best for you.
Why you should leave computers covered under one of our Managed Security/Desktop plans on? We require computers to be left on so we can do after hours maintenance. This allows you to hit the ground running when you come into work the next day.
As for personal computers, leaving them on allows any of your anti-virus software and OS (Windows/Mac?) to scan for updates.
Is it safe to leave a computer on 24/7? We would say the answer is yes, but with a couple of caveats. Make sure you protect the computer from external stress events, such as voltage surges, lightning strikes, and power outages.
The flip side is unless you have a business class firewall you may be more prone to additional outside threats and turning your computer off can protect you since your computer won’t be online.
